Hiking Trip Reports

Paria Canyon Hike, 2005

March 2005

 5 days, 4 nights, 46 miles

DAY 1, 8 miles

7:28 loaded into the “Betty Price” shuttle (28 minutes late)

9:08 stopped at the contact station to check the canyon conditions and use restrooms

9:49 sign in on the hiking register

9:50 start hike at Wire Pass Trailhead.  Clear skies, 48 degrees and windy

10:30 begin the “slot”, or narrow section, narrow, with beautiful colors

10:50 confluence of Buckskin Gulch!  Cold water.  Meet 6 Canadian hikers with wetsuits

12:23 slight opening in the canyon

1:40 Paul nearly fell into the water.  Sunny, 51 degrees

2:29 take off packs and carry over our heads in difficult/deep section

2:50 over waist deep waters

3:30 chest deep pools

6:20 camp near Middle Pass

6:45 tents up and eating dinner

7:30 bed

9:00-10:00 rain

 

DAY 2, 8 miles

7:30 wake up, 45 degrees, cloudy skies

8:15 breakfast

9:31 start hike

10:45 meet 2 hikers going up Buckskin Gulch

11:40 rain!  Put on our pack covers

11:42 logs and rocks block our path slowing our progress

12:50 reach difficult rock-fall.  Paul found a way through. Hand our packs down

2:15 Confluence of the Paria!  Water turns from red-brown to gray-brown

3:00-4:00 rain!

4:00-4:20 sleet/hail!

4:15 filter water

4:30 find campsite near P10

4:50 tents up 50 degrees

5:00 eating dinner

5:15 rain

5:50 bed 48 degrees

 

DAY 3, 10.5 miles

7:00 wake up, 40 degrees

7:45 breakfast

8:15 take down tents

9:30 start hiking 49 degrees

9:45 Jen cries (all of our feet are in pain, 3rd day of walking in 40 degree water)

11:24 Big Spring, near P12 60 degrees

3:17 Judd Hollow Pump, near P 17.5

3:40 filter spring near P19

5:07 find campsite near P20.5 (Wrather Arch campsite)

5:30 put up tents

6:00 eat dinner

7:00 filter water

7:45 bed 50 degrees

 

DAY 4, 8.5 miles (plus 2+ mile side trip hike to Wrather Arch)

7:00 wake up 40 degrees

8:00 breakfast

9:00 tents down

10:15 start Wrather Arch hike

11:15 @ base of Wrather Arch, world’s 7th largest natural stone arch

12:08 start hike

2:06 69 degrees

4:00 Last Reliable Spring near P25.5.  Eat and filter water.

7:00 find camp neat P28

7:30 tents up

8:00 Bed 60 degrees

 

DAY 5, 11 miles

7:00 wake up 50 degrees

7:30 take down tents

7:50 start hike, lots of debris washed up on boulders during flooding  

9:40 Petroglyphs

10:05 70 degrees

11:06 rest, snack near P 33, 70 degrees

12:30 78 degrees

1:02 Heath falls in the water

1:35 sign out on the hiking register

2:08 reach Lonley Dell Ranch

2:30 arrive @ Lees Ferry!
